How important is a nationwide fiber optic network for Germany from an economic and security policy perspective? In this study, Esther Kern, Johannes Rieckmann, Tim Stuchtey and Alexander Szanto on behalf of OneFiber GmbH analyze these aspects for a planned homogeneous Germany-wide fiber optic network along the railroad lines in partly already existing cable ducts. In our analysis we have paid special attention to

• the resilience of a wired data network in Germany,
• a regaining of technological sovereignty through a nationwide homogeneous fiber optic network
• the regulatory preference for a private-sector solution and
• the economic-political significance of the time factor in the development of an efficient data network
