In recent weeks, economists and politicians have fiercely debated the economic costs of an energy embargo on Russia. What has gone unnoticed are the costs that arise from prolonging the war through inaction. This BIGS essence should be understood as a cursory look at the financial costs that Germany in particular is facing as a result of years of entanglement with Russia. The paper does not claim to cover all or even an approximation of these costs. However, it is possible to gain an understanding of the orders of magnitude involved here and to provide an economic outlook on what is still to come.
