  • BASIC – Resilience of Cash Supply – Security Concepts for Emergency and Crisis Situations

In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, a power outage, or a failure of the IT and communications network, electronic payment systems can no longer function. In this case, cash assumes an important supply function, thus keeping the economic cycle running. The extent to which the resilience of cash supply can be increased in emergency and crisis situations in Germany is being investigated in greater detail as part of the “BASIC” project. To gain some ideas for the practical implementation of cash supply in Germany, Paul Glöckner, Esther Kern, and Dr. Johannes Rieckmann analyzed past international disasters and conducted interviews with key central bank actors from three countries. This study gives insights into their findings.
