Single wagonload transport is of central importance to the German industry. It provides a tightly meshed, green transport network that ensures the resilient and sustainable transport of goods by rail. In addition, the German government’s climate protection targets include a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and climate neutrality by 2045. Against the backdrop of existing capacity bottlenecks on rail and road and the continuing growth in the transport market, targeted support is needed, especially for the environmentally friendly single wagonload transport. In a new study commissioned by DB Cargo AG, we describe how this can be achieved and which financing instruments should be considered.
