Unmanned aircraft or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) are becoming increasingly important. However, UAS are not yet very present in the field of civil applications. This study identifies and critically examines the potential civil applications of UAS. Special attention is paid to the support of UAS in disaster management and scientific research as well as the use of UAS in homeland security and the protection of critical infrastructures.
