The study “The New Geopolitics of Energy” deals with global relations and national interests in energy policy. The author examines the history of energy policy and its geopolitical implications, with a particular focus on the situation of the Soviet Union after World War II and Russia’s resurgence in the 1990s as one of the world’s largest energy suppliers, and on political events in the former Soviet republics. Current developments and their impact on the geopolitics of energy, including the rise of China, the production of shale oil and the presence of the USA in the Middle East, are analysed. The political interests of the USA, Russia and China are explained as well as the interrelationships between the EU and Russia. The study shows that the geopolitics of energy move in cycles caused by limited strategic overview and the delay between investment decisions and their effects. Furthermore, the political interests of the USA, Russia and China as well as the interdependencies between the EU and Russia are explained.
