Andreas Könen has been a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at BIGS since September 2024 and was Head of the Cyber and IT Security Department at the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI) from May 2018 to March 2024. Prior to this, he was Head of Staff IT II and ÖS III at the BMI. From 2006 to 2016, Mr Könen worked at the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Bonn, where he most recently held the position of Vice President of the BSI from January 2013. From 1988 to 2006, Mr Könen was employed by the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), the foreign intelligence service of the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr Könen studied mathematics at the University of Cologne.
